South Lake Tahoe Correspondence – January 2019

We may be starting 2019 with a government shutdown, but things at Lake Tahoe are open and ready for business; the slopes, casinos, restaurants, and bars are all ready to serve. The holiday season is a wrap, but the fun continues. It’s always a party around here.

Apres ski is the after party of an eventful day on the slopes, a time for skiers of every level to recount their day.  Either the expert telling his harrowing yet exhilarating adventures of flying down double black diamonds or the beginner spending half the day on his rear-end, then giving in and joining the kids building a snowman on the bunny hill.  But skiers and snowboarders aren’t the only ones who get to kick back after a day in the snow: the snowshoer, sledder, or even the one who went and got groceries for the condo, deserves a hot toddy and some jalepeno poppers at the end of the day.

There are several places on the South Shore to fill your belly and celebrate a rewarding day with family and friends.  Here are three at Stateline, Nevada.

The Sage Room at Harveys

One night, try a classic — The Sage Room inside Harveys casino at Stateline.  The old-school steakhouse is very warm and inviting on a cold winters night.  Get your head right with an Old Fashioned made with Angel’s Envy bourbon, then a Caesar Salad prepared tableside, and you even get frozen forks.  It’s a hard menu to choose from because everything is delicious, but I would recommend the beef Wellington or the brandy-flambeed Steak Diane.

The view of Edgewood Creek and the Edgewood Golf Course from Brooks’ Bar

If you want to check out a beautiful Lake Tahoe sunset while getting a bite to eat, then head down to Edgewood Tahoe and Brooks’ Bar and Deck located inside the clubhouse on the golf course.  In the winter, a golfer’s favorite pub turns into a nice ski lodge atmosphere with plenty of good eats.  Open for lunch and dinner, Brooks’ is a great place to unwind with a cold beer and munch on their Wagyu Beef Sliders or a bowl of Hot Texas Brisket Chili.

The Hank Aaron burger at Audible’s Sports Bar

A place off the beaten path but only a quarter mile from the Stateline casinos is Audible’s Sports Bar, Grill and Gaming at 290 Kingsbury Grade, Stateline, NV.  Going on its fourth year of operation, this hidden gem offers great bar food and a friendly locals atmosphere, just like Cheers!  Enjoy a yummy char broiled chicken sandwich topped with bacon and spinach, it’s called the The Ricky.  If Jorge happens to be working, ask for his thirst quenching margarita — muy bueno! And maybe test your luck with progressive poker at the bar — maybe you’ll be a big winner.
