The weather is finally starting to warm up in Sparks, as we go from bone-dry cold to sweltering heat. However, it’s certainly a nice change from the crazy winter we just had. So, if you’re like some of us and ready to shed that winter coat and get outside and play, fortunately there’s Star Wars-inspired fun runs, community bicycle rides, and even a popular Rolling Stones cover band playing at the Nugget Resort Casino at the end of the month. Now let’s bring on summer!

May: 5k Fundraiser at Andelin Family Farm

Show up dressed as your favorite Star Wars character to the Andelin Family Farm for a fun run! The farm is inviting the community out to a 5k starting at 9am or participate in a 1-miler at 9:15am, followed by raffles, race prizes and a live DJ. The cost is $25 for the 5k and $15 for the 1-mile; it’s open to all ages and proceeds benefit Spanish Springs Boy Scout Troop 616. Check-in opens at 8am; for more information, visit www.andelinfamilyfarm.com.

May 4: May the Fourth Be With You at Final Draught

After showing off your Darth Vader costume at the Andelin family fun run, head over to Final Draught Bottles and Taps at 5318 Sparks Boulevard for a day filled with Dirty Wookies (and possible appearances by Princess Leia, Luke Skywalker, and more)! The party kicks off at 1pm. Those dressed up in Star Wars attire will be rewarded with a free flight of Wookie beers (or a lemonade for those under 21). Throughout the day, there will also be food specials, raffles, and a best-dressed competition with the winner announced at 6pm.

May 18: Riding on the River at Cottonwood Park

The local Kiwanis Club is inviting people to come out, get some exercise, and ride along the Truckee River in this special free bike riding festival. Choose to ride 5, 10, or 15 miles along the trail in Cottonwood Park and enjoy other games, bike safety checks, and added entertainment. Local community partners including the Sparks Fire Department, Keep Truckee Meadows Beautiful, the Washoe Health District, One Truckee River, and more will also be out there showing support. Festivities start at 10am; meet at 777 Spice Island Drive.

May 26: Hollywood Stones, Rolling Stones Tribute Band

If you are yearning for some good ‘ole fashioned rock ‘n’ roll, then check out the Hollywood Stones at the Nugget’s Celebrity Showroom on May 26 at 8pm. This 5-piece live band has been touring the country for more than 20 years bringing back memories with hits such as “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction” and “Sympathy for the Devil”. Tickets start at $15 for Mezzanine seats or $25 for floor booth seats; buy ‘em online at www.nuggetcasinoresort.com.

The Donut Bistro

Conveniently located right on Sparks Boulevard, the Donut Bistro offers all your favorite selections from maple bars to sprinkled pastries, plus gigantic donuts the size of a softball and croissant-like rolls with meat and cheese in the middle, all at a decent price. The employees are friendly and efficient, and it’s completely possible to fill your tummy for under five dollars. Just ask Sparks City Councilman Donald Abbott just how good The Donut Bistro is. The best part is that they’re open from 5am to 9pm daily
