Farmers Markets

The Elko and Lamoille Farmers Markets are ready to get underway! The markets run from June — October, and local producers invite you to enjoy the best of what Elko County have to offer. Vendors offer local grass fed beef, fresh vegetables, artisanal sheep cheese, honey, baked goods, and more. The Elko market is held in the parking lot of the IFA farm store on the 1st and 3rd Saturday of the month. The Lamoille market is held at the Kennedy Ranch on the 2nd and 4th Saturday of the month. At the Lamoille Market guests will have a chance to visit their beef and poultry operation, as well as take a selfie with their friendly llama, Yogi. June in Lamoille Canyon

June is a great time to visit Lamoille Canyon. The wildflowers are in bloom, wildlife can be seen and the waterfalls are gushing. Whether you go for a drive, take a day hike or spend a night camping, this is a gem that should be on everyone’s “Must See” list.

Country Under the Stars

Country singer Joe Nichols will headline the fourth annual Country Music Under the Stars June 7 at the Elko County Fairgrounds. Sandvik Mining and Rock Technology and the Boys and Girls Club of Elko announced the lineup that includes musician Mark Mackay, who will open the concert performing country and rock and roll songs.“We’re bringing in the biggest act we’ve ever had,” said Rusty Bahr, CEO of the Boys and Girls Club of Elko. Tickets start at $35 and are sold at the Boys and Girls Club and online at www.countryunderthestarselko.com. Front of stage and box seat upgrades are available with a limited amount to be sold. Gates open at 5:30 p.m. and the concert starts at 6:30 p.m. An after party with live music, dancing and drinks starts immediately after the concert. Part of the events surrounding the 2018 Elko Mining Expo, the concert is a partnership between Sandvik and the Boys and Girls Club.

Happenings at the Western Folklife Center

Enjoy a Free Special Reception on June 28 for the “Mountain Picassos” exhibit in the Weigand Gallery. For more than half a century, Jean and Phillip Earl of Reno used clues from old maps, letters and books to hunt for and document aspen tree carvings — distinctive figures carved into aspen trees in the high country meadows of the Great Basin. Jean Earl will take you on an illustrated tour of their discoveries, carved by Basque sheepherders in the early to mid-20th Century. This talk, and companion exhibition in the Wiegand Gallery, made possible with support from Nevada Humanities and the Nevada Arts Council, a division of the Department of Tourism and Cultural Affairs.

Following the “Mountain Picassos” reception, The Western Folklife Center will host John Reischman and the Jaybirds. This two-time Juno-nominated band delivers their own trademark blend of original songs and instrumentals, reimagined tunes from old-time vaults and bluegrass power. They are simultaneously modern, vintage and unique. Concert starts at 7:00pm. Tickets are $20 general admission, $15 for students, seniors, and Western Folklife Center members; $5 for 12 years and younger.
