Elko Correspondence – November 2018

Fall greetings from Elko. There is lots to do this month, and here are a few events that caught my eye.

Cozy Cocktail Walk

Get into the holiday spirit early this year with Cozy Cocktail Walk on November 10th. Grab your friends and enjoy touring a variety of downtown businesses while sampling a multitude of warm festive drinks, like hot buttered rum, boozy hot chocolate, spiced cider sangria, and hot toddies, just to name a few. Get an early jump on your holiday

shopping while having lots of fun at the same time! Participants will begin at the Commercial Casino where they will receive a mug for sampling and a map. Tickets will be available at the door beginning at 4pm and are $25 per person. (Sponsored by Stockmen’s & Commercial Casinos).

For those not wishing to sample cozy cocktails, a designated driver option is available for $10. Non-alcoholic beverages can be tasted at most locations. (Sponsored by Kidwell & Gallagher) Have fun and keep warm with our Ugly Sweater or Onesie Contest! Participant eligibility requires one to get their photo taken during the event at the Official Photo Stop listed on the map. 1st Place will receive $150 in DBA Bucks, and 2nd & 3rd will each be awarded $50 in DBA Bucks! The Elko DBA wants to encourage participants to drink responsibly and encourages all to have a designated driver or book a room in one of our many downtown hotels. Playa to Peaks Art Show

The Great Basin College Art Gallery will display paintings and ceramics inspired by Nevada landscapes titled “Playa to Peaks.” The semi-annual art show in the Leonard Center of Student Life on the GBC Elko campus traditionally features artwork of students; however, Art Instructor and featured artist Patty Fox, wanted to make a dedication to this fall’s show. “I’ve been teaching here for so long, I wanted to do something for the college. I painted landscapes all summer,” said Fox, who has taught painting and drawing at GBC for 29 years. “The drawings you see in this exhibit are about my interpretation and feelings about the Ruby Mountains and East Humboldt Range. They are not documentation but rather expressions of this location, wanting to capture the spirit of an image rather than a picture of the image.” In addition to Fox’s paintings and water media drawings, GBC Ceramic Instructor Debbie Finley will display clay sculptures she created while she was an artist in residence in 2016 for the Black Rock Desert-High Rock Canyon Emigrant Trails National Conservation Area (NCA) Artists in Residence (AiR) program. South Fork State Park

There is still plenty of time to enjoy our nice weather, and South Fork State Park is the perfect spot on a weekend day. I had a fun last week kayaking on the water. The campground is open, the fishing is good and the hiking/biking trails beckon. Check out their website at parks.nv.gov/parks/south-fork for more info.
