Elko Correspondence – December 2019

Christmas is almost here, and Elko has plenty of great Christmas events to see. Here are a few of the best in the area to take in:

Pioneer Christmas

Bring the whole family out on December 7th for the California Trail Center’s Annual Holiday celebration! Kids and adults alike are invited to enjoy hot chocolate and take part in various Christmas crafting stations making their own ornaments, cards, and decorations. Grab a prop and take a selfie in our photo booth. Sing and dance along to live music from Southwind. The celebration is free and open to everyone. Visitors are encouraged to bring nonperishable food items to benefit FISH (Friends in Service Helping) and families of Elko County. Festivities are from 10 am until 3 pm. Annual Snowflake Festival

Head to downtown Elko for the 2019 Snowflake Festival’s Candyland Christmas! Saturday, December 14, 2019 at 12 PM – 6 PM PST Visit Santa’s Work Shop at Dalling Hall for fun activities & pictures with jolly old St. Nick, buy a cookie tin and participate in the family friendly “Cookie Crawl,” enjoy hot cocoa at the “Cocoa Cottage,” follow the Candyland path to experience fun, entertaining & interactive events in a multitude of downtown businesses, and oh so much more!
The fun and festivities will culminate with the annual “Parade of Lights,” which will follow the normal parade route. FMI: https://www.facebook.com/ElkoDowntown/.

The Stage Door is Open

In other Elko news, there is a new arts venue in Elko worth checking out. The Stage Door in Elko is a 1940’s theatre-themed performance venue with the goal to bring more entertainment to the downtown area, provide an affordable venue for artists to display their work, and hopefully create some awesome open mic nights! They have a full bar to accompany their 21+ shows and events. Exhibits at the Museum

The Northeastern Nevada Museum has two new photo exhibits going up in conjunction with the National Cowboy Poetry Gathering.

Open Range

This collection features many images of cowboys in Northeastern Nevada from the 1970s to today. This show is in the Halleck Bar Gallery until February 9, 2020.

The Forgotten Cowboys

This show is a photography exhibition by London-based photographer John Ferguson. He became interested in the African American cowboy as a youth and has spent time photographing in the American South and southwestern states. On view in the Barrick Gallery until February 2, 2020.
